LAHORE, Feb 16: Punjab University teachers and students held a demonstration on campus premises on Thursday against the killing of a varsity employee.

Rizwan, 25, a mess attendant, was killed allegedly when police opened fire on a students wing rally taken out to condemn the blasphemous cartoons on Wednesday on the New Campus bridge.

Speaking on the occasion, PU Academic Staff Association president Dr Mumtaz Salik said the police had deliberately opened fire on peaceful protesters which should be condemned at all levels. He said instead of killing own people the government should take a bold stance over the issue and sever diplomatic ties with Denmark.

The PU administration also flayed the police firing and tear-gas shelling on peaceful demonstration and demanded a judicial investigation into the matter.

Faculty of Engineering and Technology dean Prof Dr Arif Butt said the teachers should keep a vigil on student protests so that arsonists could not penetrate among them to achieve their vested interests.—Staff Reporter
