Aren’t hospitals protected under the rules of war?

In conflict zones, hospitals are generally protected from attacks under the rules of war, according to BBC.

However, their protected status may be revoked if they are used for activities outside their humanitarian function that are harmful to the enemy, as outlined in Protocol 1 of the Geneva Conventions.

Israel contends that Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, falls into this category, a claim disputed by Hamas and hospital authorities.
