The Biden administration has warned Israel against civilian casualties inside Gaza’s largest Al-Shifa Hospital as the Israeli army lays siege of the facility, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports.

Israel claims the hospital sits atop Hamas’ vast network of underground tunnels and is being used by the group as a human shield. Hamas, however, denies these claims.

According to Haaretz, the Biden administration’s fears of the hospital becoming the scene of a deadly battle is part of a broader concern by the US over the growing number of civilian casualties in Gaza.
