Israel eyes Blair as Gaza humanitarian coordinator: report

Israel is looking to appoint former UK PM Tony Blair as a humanitarian coordinator for Gaza, according to Israeli media outlet Times of Israel, citing a report by local news website Ynet, Al Jazeera reports.

Ynet’s report suggests that Blair had been contacted on the matter and talks have been ongoing in recent weeks.

Blair’s office responded to the report saying he has neither received nor been offered a position. His office did not deny any contact with Israeli officials. According to Ynet, the exact scope of the role has yet to be defined.

In 2007, Blair was appointed the Middle East Envoy for The Quartet — a group of international powers that included the US, EU, Russia and the UN. He stepped down from the role in 2015.
