KURRAM: Agricultural experts have successfully produced and commercialised various products from the rare wild plum, known as Arghnaja, in Kurram tribal district.

The fruit, which grows abundantly in Parachinar, was often wasted and underutilised. However, after three years of hard work by the agriculture department, the experts have produced various products such as jam, chutneys, juice and squashes from Arghanja.

Mohammad Shafiq, the owner of Spinghar foods factory, said that they were making different food items from wild plum under the guidance of agricultural experts. The experts want to prevent wastage of wild fruits and bring them into regular use.

Senior research officer Iqrar Hussain told Dawn that putting Arghanja to use was a great success of the agriculture department. “The initiative not only saves the fruit from being wasted but also creates employment opportunities for people,” he added.

The locals have praised the agriculture department for the initiative.
