KHAIRPUR, Jan 30: An all-parties conference organized by the Sindh National Party here on Sunday opposed construction of dams on the River Indus. Around 13 political parties, including the People’s Party Parliamentarians, Pakistan Muslim League-N, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, Shehri Ittehad and the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, participated in the conference.
Speaking on the occasion, district JUI organizer Maulana Abbasi said construction of any dam on the Indus was not only against the law but also against Shariah.
PPP MPA Nawab Wassan stressed the need for unity among political parties to resolve problems of Sindh.
He claimed that all parties of Sindh had rejected the Kalabagh dam, adding that a handful of people could not sell Sindh’s resources for their petty interests.
He said his party had a clear stand against construction of the dam. He claimed the PPP had got more votes (about 800,000) than other parties in Punjab in the last general election which showed that people were against the Kalabagh dam.
Mr Wassan alleged that Sindh was being deprived of political and economic rights.
SNP chairman Ameer Bhambhro said holding of the all- parties conference was aimed at mustering support against the Kalabagh project.—Correspondent
