PESHAWAR, Jan 28: Six workers of Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) were arrested on charge of attacking a farewell party of students after their pre-arrest bail petition was rejected by Additional District and Sessions Judge Rajab Ali Khan on Saturday.

Soon after the order was pronounced, the University Campus police arrested petitioners Arshidullah, Nizam Khan, Sohail, Rehan Shah, Sardar Ali and Bakht Baidar.

The FIR against the accused was lodged with the Campus police station on Jan 5 by the principal of Khyber Law College, Misal Zada, soon after the attack on the party arranged for new students at the Peshawar University.

The complainant said that the attackers harassed girl students, forcing them to take refugee in the common room. One of the girls fainted when the attackers were reportedly trying to break open the door of the common room. The attackers manhandled several male students.

The IJT refuted the allegations and said its workers had gone there to convince the students to end the party as it amounted to spreading vulgarity in the institution. It said that instead of listening to them the organizers of the party resorted to firing and vandalism.

The counsel for the petitioners contended that they were charged in a bailable offence and there was no evidence against them.
