LAHORE: The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) on Wednesday inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Lahore University of Management and Sciences (LUMS) for fleet route optimisation and digitalisation by using AI (Artificial Intelligence).

The MoU signing ceremony was held at LWMC head office. LWMC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Babar Sahib Din and LUMS Centre for Urban Information, Technology and Policy Chairman Dr Momin Uppal signed the memorandum.

Mr Din said all the measures were being taken to adapt the modern technologies to implement an integrated solid waste management system.

He said a pilot project of route optimisation was started in Gulberg Town and all vehicle routes were optimised with the help of LUMS.

He said with the help of artificial intelligence, the number of kilometers and vehicles were reduced and the use of AI had helped in saving about 100,000 litres of fuel.

Dr Uppal said the centre is trying to solve the problems of cities.

He said in order to ensure implementation of an integrated solid waste management system, “we have started the project in Gulberg Town initially which will be further expanded to all nine towns of the city.”

The process of route optimisation will be completed in a phased manner throughout Lahore. A 24-hour digital monitoring of operational vehicles is being done to ensure the best sanitation facilities in the provincial capital.

Earlier, Mr Din visited the Thokar workshop to review the working of cleaning machinery and presided over the meeting regarding preparations for Eidul Azha.

The workshop in-charge gave a briefing on vehicle repairing and other working and Mr Din directed the team to complete procurement of vehicle tyres and batteries.
