HYDERABAD, Jan 26: Measures will be taken for rehabilitation of discharged patients of the Sir C. J. Institute of Psychiatry, Hyderabad, so that they can become useful citizens.

This was stated by DCO Mohammad Hussain Syed while presiding over the first meeting of the management committee for rehabilitation of patients of the institute here on Thursday.

He said sensitive people become psychic due to injustices and excesses of the society. He regretted that relatives of the patients admitted them to hospitals giving fake addresses. He said family members neither visited them nor enquired about their health from doctors.

The medical superintendent of the institute, Dr Mohammad Qasim Soomro, said the institute was short of funds. He said the institute was also facing shortage of lower staff because there was a ban on recruitments.

He said only one million rupees had been allocated to the institute for medicines and Rs120,000 for other contingency sub-heads. He said 268 patients were admitted to 11 different wards and more than 100 patients on average visited the OPD every day.

He said 225 mattresses and clothes had been received from different philanthropists last year but there was shortage of medicines, bed sheets, blankets and other daily-use items.

Dr Soomro said patients who had covered their mental health but had not been discharged due to non-availability of their addresses had become a burden on the institute. He added that they should be given incentives to earn their own living.

The DCO told the meeting that many philanthropists were ready to donate funds. He said funds from Zakat would also be released to the institute.

It was decided that future meetings would be held at the institute and the next meeting would be held on Feb 16.
