MEDIA BIAS

MEDIA BIAS: A few weeks ago, I shared the Peshawar mosque blast incident on my WhatsApp group and was surprised that at least half of my contacts had no information about the incident. They kept asking for details. Living in digitalised world where, say, even a dancing girl gets the attention of millions within seconds, dreadful incidents continue to elude mass public attention. Is this because people deliberately ignore such incidents, or is it because such incidents do not get enough coverage on mainstream media? Our media may be keeping us updated, but it carries a perception of political bias that has pushed people away. A little bit of introspection on the part of media organisations would help their cause while keeping the people informed.

A NUISANCE: Towards the end of the recent Ramazan, an incident in my locality left many wondering. Midnight cricket continuing till Sehri created a lot of nuisance. Some elders tried to convince the youngsters to do away with their games as it was causing disturbance to one and all who were attending to their late-night prayers before having to wake up for Sehri and then to remain busy with office and domestic chores during the day. Instead of listening to the advice, the boys started misbehaving, and the elderly had to retreat. The relevant authorities must ensure that such activities are not repeated anywhere when we have Ramazan the next year.

CRAZY CHECKPOSTS: While trying to reduce the crime rate in the federal capital, the police force is making life miserable for commuters at Faizabad by setting up a checkpost and making speed breakers that together result in long queues and it takes up to two hours to cross the particular point. With fuel prices going north, such strategies should be avoided. Anybody can come up with a better strategy than that.
