GWADAR: A strike by transporters led to the suspension of vegetable and fruit supplies from Sindh to Gwadar, Pasni, Turbat and other areas of Makran division on Sunday.

The transporters went on strike in protest against “misbehaviour” of highway police with drivers at points of entry.

The protesters blocked the coastal highway and did not allow passenger coaches, trucks and other vehicles carrying vegetable, fruit and other goods for Gwadar to pass through the area.

The bus union also joined hands with the transporters to protest alleged raids on passenger buses by highway police.

“We will continue our strike unless highway police stop unnecessary and unjustified raids,” a representative of the striking transporters said.

However, a spokesman for the coastal highway police said in a statement that the force signalled a passenger coach to stop. Diesel was found during a search of the vehicle.

“The transporters placed their vehicles in the middle of the road in protest and resorted to unseemly behaviour with police,” the spokesman added.
