‘Robber’ shot dead by off-duty policeman

KARACHI: A suspected robber was shot dead in an alleged encounter with an off-duty policeman in Korangi late on Thursday night while two passers-by were wounded in the firing carried out by his fleeing accomplice, police said on Friday.

Zaman Town SHO Iftikhar Arain said that Head Constable Adil was on his way, along with his family, on a motorbike when two armed robbers tried to snatch his two-wheeler near Indus Hospital.

He said the policeman put up resistance and opened fire on them. As a result, one suspect was killed while his accomplice escaped, he added.

The officer said that a woman, identified as Alina Salman, 25, and a man, Adnan Sanwer, 22, suffered bullet wounds due to the firing by the fleeing suspect. Their condition was out of danger at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), he said.

He said the deceased suspect had been identified; he had past criminal record. One pistol and motorcycle had been recovered from him.

Separately, eight suspected robbers were shot and wounded in different encounters across the city late on Thursday night.

These encounters took place in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Awami Colony, Super Market, F.B. Industrial Area and New Karachi.
