SINKING ECONOMY

SINKING ECONOMY: Pakistan has been facing inflation for as long as one can remember. Undoubtedly, inflation is a critical reason behind the current economic turmoil. Prices of each and everything have gone up, and, in fact, are continuing to move vertically, with no end in sight. The life of the lower and middle classes is in a mess. It is difficult for them to merely survive and feed the families. One of the main causes of inflation is the tendency to print bank- notes without due economic justification. The situation is getting worse by the day. The government should take substan- tial measures to overcome the crisis.

ROAD ACCIDENTS: Roads in Karachi have become death traps where no one is safe. There are many reasons behind the increasing number of accidents, but reckless driving seems to be the biggest culprit. People are always in a rush, paying scant attention to anything else. Besides, poor and worsening road conditions, lack of traffic signals, increasing encroachments, and lack of traffic education are also among the reasons behind the spike in the number of road accidents in the city. Mass awareness regarding traffic rules and regulations is an urgent need. Besides, the roads need to be widened with proper lighting after sunset.

KARACHI MASS TRANSIT: To cater to the transport needs of the public, the Sindh government had passed the long-awaited Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Bill in 2016. Recently, the government has initiated several mass transit projects in Karachi. But are these facilities for all without any discrimination? Certainly not. Modern, affordable and environment-friendly Green Line and all such buses have specific routes, but the problem is that none of these routes meets the demands of the residents of Baldia Town. They are condemned to use overcrowded, rickety buses. Is it fair?
