SIALKOT, Jan 13: As many as 350 and 150 prisoners are infected with hepatitis-C and B respectively in the district jail. This was said by Jail Superintendent Muhammad Yousaf Ghouri while briefing Sialkot Tehsil Nazim Imtiazuddin Dar who visited the jail on the Eid day (Wednesday).
The superintendent said the jail hospital management had recently conducted tests of more than 1,400 prisoners out of whom 350 were found infected with hepatitis-C and 150 prisoners with hepatitis-B.
The tehsil nazim also visited different barracks of male and female prisoners and inquired about their problems. He announced provision of gas heaters in all barracks from his pocket.
Reports said the district jail was overcrowded as more than 2,500 prisoners had been detained there having a total capacity of 662. Seven inmates were freed on the eve of Eidul Azha.
smashed: The district police claimed to have smashed some 10 inter-district gangs of dacoits and arrested their 33 members besides arresting 1,337 proclaimed offenders and 504 court absconders during the last 12 days.
DPO Dr Tariq Khokhar told reporters here on Friday that the police had also recovered from their possession the stolen and snatched property worth Rs15 million, including ornaments, electronic items, seven cars and 28 motorcycles.
He said that 282 drug pushers were also arrested and recovered from their custody 32kg hashish and three kilogramme opium. In addition, he said police also unearthed 35 distilleries of liquor and seized a great number of liquor bottles. Some 35 drunkards were also rounded up during the period.
Besides, the DPO said the police also arrested 416 people for keeping illicit weapons and recovered from their custody three Kalashnikovs, 47 rifles, 31 guns, 295 pistols, 28 revolvers, 14 draggers and 2,000 cartridges.
