SUKKUR, Jan 5: More than 50 women activists of the Awami Sindhiani Tehrik took out a procession and staged a protest demonstration at the clock tower in Sukkur on Thursday against proposed construction of the controversial Kalabagh dam. The procession started from the Teer chowk and after marching through various roads reached the clock tower.

The protesting women were led by Hadi Bux Bhat, Samina, Kousar Phulpoto and Saima.

They were chanting slogans against the dam and the government.

The leaders of the protesters said a grand protest demonstration would be held in Hyderabad on January 28.

They claimed the Kalabagh dam and the greater Thal canal were anti-Sindh projects and Sindh would never accept them.

The protesting women demanded from the government to withdraw the projects immediately.

A similar protest demonstration, organized by the Awami Sindhiani Tehrik, was also held in Ghotki.

The protesters had reached Ghotki from Hyderabad to launch protests against anti-Sindh projects.

Around 120 activists of the party, including 20 women, were led by Samina Bhatti.

Meanwhile, a protest demonstration was staged in Thull and Bahoo Khoso against the Kalabagh dam.

Sindh JUI Secretary-General Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro slammed the government for raising the controversial issue of the Kalabagh dam which could harm integrity and solidarity of the country.

He also condemned the army ‘operation’ in Balochistan.
