Suspects ‘involved in DHA muggings’ held after encounter

KARACHI: Two suspected robbers and a policeman suffered bullet wounds during an exchange of gunfire in Clifton, police said on Monday.

Boat Basin police SHO Naseer Tanoli said that four men were fleeing on two motorbikes after committing a robbery when a police patrol signalled them to stop near Umer Sharif Park. Instead, they started firing and in an ensuing encounter, suspects Azhar Shabbir and Majid Saleem were arrested in an injured condition, he said.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Faisal also suffered a single bullet wound in the shoulder, but his condition was out of danger.

The police recovered two pistols, seven mobile phones, four laptops and one motorbike from their custody.

“They were involved in more than 20 cases of mugging and heinous crimes,” said SSP-South Syed Asad Raza in a statement.

It said on July 4, they shot a man during a robbery at Nishat Commercial in DHA and snatched nine cell phones. They were involved in the snatching of two laptops, three mobile phones and Rs53,000 from a TCS office near Bilawal House in Clifton.

They also looted a shop and took away Rs600,000 and three cell phones. In another incident in DHA, Phase-I, they snatched four cell phones, two laptops and cash from a shop. They had also committed robberies in other parts of the metropolis.
