SHOW OF FRUSTRATION: The opposition seems to be losing the plot with every passing day. The recent act of frustration in which a leading member of the party crossed the limit of decency on live television is, indeed, condemnable. The highly objectionable and vulgar remarks against an ethnic community showed the level of frustration in the ranks of the party.

CONTROVERSIAL LEGISLATION: The recent transgender rights legislation is quite controversial. The legislation seems to be normalising negative tendencies. This is a matter of grave concern as it will lead to grave consequences. Our family system is already suffering due to the influences of Western culture and any contradictory legislation will prove to be the last nail in the coffin.

SPOON-FEEDING: Populist leaders spoon-feed uneducated and uninformed minds and subsequently feast on them. Unfortunately, most Pakistanis lack the ability to make informed choices related to their leaders. Primarily due to lack of basic education, the people are willing to be spoon-fed by the demagogues. An educated populace hardly falls prey to this. In 1964, the anti-Vietnam war movement in the United States compelled the government of the time to withdraw from Vietnam, although the Americans had been fed the wrong information.

Such is the power of an educated populace.

UNCEREMONIOUS EXIT: This is with reference to the article “Return of the ‘Dar’ Ages” (Sep 28). The government had repeatedly claimed that the country has been saved from default. If so, the credit must go to Miftah Ismail. He took difficult decisions and carried out tough negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). But he received the flak for some unpopular measures. His abrupt and unceremonious exit at this juncture, amid soaring inflation, is unfortunate.
