From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1972: Fifty Years Ago: BD’s UN membership

There was no issue of the newspaper on Sept 24, 1972, on account of the Shab-i-Barat holiday. The following excerpt is from the previous day’s issue.

UNITED NATIONS: At the meeting of the General Assembly Steering Committee, which recommended yesterday [Sept 21] that the world body debate the issue of admission of Bangladesh into the UN, the Chinese representative, Mr Huang Hua, calling for the item to be excluded from the agenda said: “The Chinese delegation is not fundamentally opposed to the admission of Bangladesh into the United Nations. But we firmly hold that the purposes and principles of the UN Charter must be abided by, and the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly must be complied with.”

Mr Huang said this was not a dispute between Bangladesh and the Chinese delegation and those countries supporting Bangladesh’s admission into the world body. “This still remains a dispute between the General Assembly and the Security Council, and Bangladesh. The Chinese delegation reiterates that we firmly oppose the consideration of Bangladesh application by the UN General Assembly under the present circumstances. This stand of the Chinese delegation is firm and unshakeable.” — News agencies
