ABOUT THE QUAID

This is with reference to the article ‘Jinnah and Gandhi’ (Sept 11). I remember having read some 55 years ago in Jamaat-i-Islami-Hind’s weekly organ Radiance, published from Delhi, a quotation taken from Indian historian R.C. Majumdar to the effect that Jinnah was too straightforward and simple to understand the diplomacy of Gandhi, who tried to pose himself as the pope of the ‘Holy Hindu Empire’. Though short, it was a comprehensive comment about the two leaders.

INCREASING MISERIES: The recent floods have not only pushed the victims out of their homes, but also compelled them to discontinue the education of their children. This will adversely affect the country’s effort to ensure basic education for every child. The politicians are busy holding their rallies and processions, while the natural calamity has compounded the misery of the people on multiple fronts.

TEACHERS’ RECRUITMENT: After the recent rains, the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa resumed educational activities on Aug 15. But many schools have been without primary school teachers (PSTs) since the recruitment process of teachers has not been finalised yet. The department concerned should speed up the process to ensure timely delivery of subject matter to the students. The delay is causing anxiety among the students and their parents.

WRONG IMPRESSION: This is with reference to the report ‘Court allows Hindu women to pray at Varanasi mosque (Sept 13). The headline gave the impression as if the court had given its final decision in favour of the Hindu women petitioners who believed that it was their right to worship all year round at the Gyanvapi Mosque in India. The fact is that the court had rejected the objection from the Muslim side, and had at the same time fixed a date for the next hearing in the case.
