COVERING CRIME

COVERING CRIME: During my visits to Malaysia, I have noticed an interesting aspect of media’s coverage of matters related to crime and punishment. Malaysian media, in utter contrast to its Pakistani counterpart, highlights the crime by giving full coverage to the punishment aspect rather than the crime itself. In Pakistan crime is given full media coverage even before the judicial process begins.

Our media can certainly do itself a big favour by learning from the Malaysian practice.

CLEAN ENERGY: Nuclear fusion is the process through which hydrogen atoms collide with force and form a helium atom. The process takes place in the stars and the sun as well. A by-product of this reaction is a large amount of energy. Researchers at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) recorded the first ignition during nuclear fusion earlier this month (Aug 8), proving that the energy produced during this reaction is self-sustaining. The process can be utilised as an alternative source to generate electricity in place of fossil fuels.

CHANGE OF STRATEGY: The opposition leader used to tell the nation repeatedly about the debts taken by a couple of political parties that had put the country under pressure. As a voter looking for a change, I voted for him in the 2018 general elections. Now that has is out of office, he is campaigning actively, but without a single mention of the debts. His supporters wonder about the reason behind such a change in his focus.

SAVING ENVIRONMENT: The recent monsoon rains following intense heatwaves are essentially the consequence of the climate change phenomenon. Pakistan is among the most suffering nations, but the authorities concerned do not appear to be as concerned as they should have been. The government should step up efforts to save the country from plunging into a catastrophe as millions of lives are at stake.
