Judge apprised of prisoners’ problems

SUKKUR, Dec 15: Sukkur District and Sessions Judge Aftab Ahmed Khan, along with the district nazim, DIG prisons, Sukkur DCO and DPO, visited the central prison-II here on Thursday to apprise himself of problems being faced by prisoners. The prisoners presented some of their problems, including non-availability of custody police to take them to courts for hearing as their cases were getting delayed.

The district nazim requested the judge to constitute a committee comprising district police and jail authorities to ensure required arrangements so that the prisoners should not suffer from such problems.

The district nazim announced six water-tanks and eleven spring beds for the jail from district government funds on the request of the jail superintendent.

The health EDO was also directed to ensure provision of a lady doctor once a week in the jail with required medicines.

Chairman of the district zakat and ushr committee informed the judge that an amount of Rs80,000 each was being provided from the zakat fund to the central prison-I and II for medicines.

The chairman was directed to increase the fund to Rs150,000 for the central prison-I due to its large capacity.

SEMINAR: An official of a Karachi-based NGO, Shirkat Gah, Ms Nighat Taufeeq, has said that discriminatory laws against women should be changed.

She was speaking in a seminar on ‘gender violence’ held at a local hotel on Thursday under the aegis of Shirkat Gah.

A large number of women activists from Shahdad Kot, Larkana, Shikarpur, Khairpur and Sukkur attended the seminar.

Ms Taufeeq said that women in Pakistan were facing discrimination at different levels of society.

She said that incidents of violence against women had become a feature of the day and quoted a number of instances of karo-kari killings.

She said it was proved through statistics that such incidents were increasing with every passing day.

The senior programme officer alleged that male culprits were never charged for killing a woman in our male dominated society.

This was a main reason for increasing violence against women, she said.

Ms Taufeeq urged the government to enact effective legislation in the parliament to punish men for killing women in karo-kari cases.

Advocate Paryal Mari, Maulana Ubaidullah Bhutto and Mohammad Yamin Mewati also addressed the seminar and pledged to struggle for the rights of women.

PROTEST: Scores of workers under the flag of National Labour Federation, Sukkur zone, staged a protest demonstration in front of the press club on Thursday against increase in prices of commodities.

The protesters were led by Rana Mehmood Ali Khan and Syed Nizamuddin Shah.

They were carrying placards and banners and were chanting slogans.

They said the increase in prices, especially of petroleum products, had made their lives miserable.

They demanded from the government to take measures to relieve workers and common men from the price hike.

Training: A 15-day training programme regarding construction of fish ponds, selection of commercial fishes and their culture has been started from Dec 13 at the Fisheries Training Centre, Mando Dero, Sukkur, according to official press note issued here on Wednesday.

Interested people have been advised to participate in the programme.

PN SHORT COURSES: The registration for short service commissioned officers in education and special branches of the Pakistan Navy is under way from Dec 12, and will continue to Jan 20, at the Navy Selection Centre, Sukkur, according to an official handout issued on Wednesday.

Candidates possessing qualification of M.A. in English, M.Sc Maths, Physics and Pakistan Studies in second division, having age not more than 28 years on July 1, 2006 can apply for the Education Branch.

Similarly, Masters in computer science, software engineering, information technology and computer technology having age not more than 35 years on July 1, 2006 will be eligible for the Special Branch as computer programmer.

The documents of Matric, F.Sc, B.Sc, and M.Sc (attested copies) NIC and domicile certificate with uncrossed postal order of Rs.100/- was essentially required for registration.
