Book review: The Usborne Big Book Of Big Dinosaurs

They might have been dead for millions of years, but today’s generation is more well-versed about dinosaurs than the combined knowledge of their parents, uncles and aunts. They associate themselves with the scariest creatures more than any other living animal, and this book — The Usborne Big Book of Big Dinosaurs — is one of the reasons why dinosaurs have a fan following in this era.

Written by Alex Firth and Fabiano Fiorin, this book makes life easier for its readers by bringing ‘to life’ different kinds of dinosaurs including, Brachiosaurus, T-Rex, and Pteranodon. You might know some of them thanks to the Jurassic Park and the Jurassic World films, and different animated series, but knowing all is the thrill that this book provides to readers of all ages.

For those who think that dinosaurs only roamed the land, this fascinating book is a must-read. It tells you all there is to know about creatures that went extinct long before humans roamed Earth. While kids might fall in love with this book because of its illustrations and simple text, their parents might also learn a thing or two from the information on these pages.

Written in consultation with an expert on dinosaurs, the book describes the size, habits and time they lived in. The last few pages of the book give a brief outline of the period certain dinosaurs were alive. Extra-long fold-out pages carrying illustrations of the most terrifying creatures of all time would certainly grab the attention of kids and adults alike.

How big was the tallest dinosaur? What was the size of dinosaur babies when they hatched out from eggs? How many types of flying dinosaurs were there? How many years ago did dinosaurs live on Earth? These are some of the basic questions answered in a reader-friendly manner.

The other facts that have been explained in the book would simply shock the readers, no matter what age. Argentinosaurus was 123 feet long and weighed over 100 tonnes, which is more than the weight of 16 elephants. Archaeopteryx was one of the world’s first birds while some sea dinosaurs were as big as whales.

This book is a must-have for every household that has a self-proclaimed dinosaur expert. Younger kids would simply love the flap-carrying illustrations, older ones would learn the spellings by identifying the dinosaur, while a know-it-all kid would spend hours ‘updating’ his prehistoric knowledge, in the modern world.
