KARACHI, Dec 6: The Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad, has said that a comprehensive plan is being prepared and a coordinated system is being evolved to provide protection to people in case of any calamity in the province.

He was chairing a meeting in connection with disaster management at the Governor’s House on Monday.

In this regard, he said the responsibilities and role of each and every individual of concerned organizations had been determined, and now, through joint efforts, damage in the wake of any emergency can be minimized and people could be kept safe.

He called for finalizing the strategy within a fortnight and stressed the need for immediate steps in this direction.

The committee formed under the adviser Local Government presented its report and recommendations.

The meeting also decided to establish a ‘Disaster Management Board’ to be headed by senior provincial minister. It will include ministers for health and home, and adviser on local government, heads of engineering varsities and others as members.

Governor Ibad also directed the establishment of disaster management committees at district levels and stressed on publicising the determined role and responsibilities of every individual and organization, so they could be activated in the minimum possible time in the time of need.

He called for strengthening capacity building in each district and directed that the fire brigade system too should be made effective in all districts.

He asked the health department to organise disaster management steps in all hospitals.

The meeting was informed that the city government will procure machinery worth Rs600 million during the next three months to meet the requirements of disaster management while one more snorkel will also be purchased.

It was informed that the city government had chalked out a Rs1 billion plan in connection with disaster management.
