Aqeel, Asim in final

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: Top seed Aqeel Khan and Asim Shafik eased into the final of the Federal Cup tennis championship at the Islamabad Club on Friday. Aqeel’s victim was Iman Gul, dispatched 6-2, 6-2 while Asim brushed Muhammad Shafik away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

In the boys’ U-17 category, Tanveer Ashiq defeated Yasir Khan 6-4, 6-4 to set up a meeting in the decider with Omer Babar, a 6-2, 6-3 winner against Khurrum Nazir.

Sara Mahboob qualified for the ladies singles final with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Sara Mansoor and will now play Nida Rahim, who beat Mariam Rahim.

Sara Mahboob also made it to the final of the girls’ under-17 event as she outplayed Saba Aziz 6-3, 6-1.

The other semifinal between Sara Mansoor and Anoosha Aslam was unfinished. Sara had won the first set 6-1 and both players were tied at 1-1 in the second.

Men’s doubles semifinals: Asim Shafik-Shahzad Khan bt Nomi Qamar-M. Shafiq 6-2, 6-3, Aqeel Khan-Jalil Khan bt Mahmood Khan-Inam Gul 6-1, 6-1.

Boys U-17 singles semifinals: Tanveer Ashiq bt Yasir Khan 6- 4, 6-4, Omer Babar bt Khurrum Nazir 6-2, 6-3.

Boys U-13 singles final: Syed Zohair Raza bt Gibranul Haq 2-4, 5-4 (2), 4-1.

Ladies singles semifinals: Sara Mahboob bt Sara Mansoor 6-2, 7-5, Nida Rahim bt Mariam Rahim

Girls’ U-17 singles quarterfinals: Anoosha Aslam bt Zainab Khan 6-1, 6-1.

Girls’ U-17 semifinals: Sara Mahboob bt Saba Aziz 6-3, 6-1, Sara Mansoor v Anoosha Aslam (unfinished Sara won first set 6-1; second set 1-1).
