Poppy crop destroyed in Mohmand

GHALANAI: Police destroyed poppy crop grown over 86-kanal in Upper Prang Ghar tehsil of Mohmand tribal district here on Thursday.

The poppy eradication campaign was launched three days ago in various localities of the tribal district. SDPO Dilfaraz Khan led the operation in Upper Prang Ghar. Twenty policemen took part in the operation and destroyed poppy crop in Jawo, Saha Oba, Nehqi, Khro Shah, Shagai, Mandal and Talu areas.

The SDPO told Dawn that the operation to eradicate poppy would remain continued. He said that the campaign was launched on the order of Mardan RPO Yaseen Farooq and Mohmand DPO Salahuddin Kundi.

AWARENESS: Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) held an event to mark International Mine Awareness Day in Mohmand Model School Ghazi Baig here on Thursday.

People from different walks of life attended the event. The additional deputy commissioner, Mir Khawas Khan Wazir, PRCS provincial programme coordinator Amad Yousaf and principal of the school Nazeer Ahmad spoke on the occasion.

Amad Yousaf said that the entire region, especially the tribal districts, was affected by militancy and conflict. He said that the remains of war led to tragic incidents.

He said that lack of awareness about mines and explosives was main reason of tragic incidents including blasts and explosions. He added that main purpose of marking day was to create awareness among all segments of the society and protect lives of people.

Speaking on the occasion, Mir Khawas Khan Wazir said that awareness and education were important. He urged teachers and local elders to focus on creating awareness among students and youth about mines and explosives. He added that some mines and explosive devises were in the shape of toys.

He lauded Mohmand chapter of PRCS for providing excellent service to people during natural calamities in the tribal district. He assured PRCS of his full cooperation.

The additional deputy commissioner also distributed prizes among students while Amad Yousaf presented shield to the guest on behalf of PRCS.
