LAHORE, Dec 2: Governor Khalid Maqbool has said continuous update in curriculum is a must to improve the standard of education. He was talking to reporters at the International Conference on the Future of Schools and Education, “Towards 2035: The School of Tomorrow” at a local hotel on Friday. It was organized by the Beaconhouse Group.

The governor said that politics had been eliminated from the public universities and students were more concerned about their studies.

Earlier, the governor said at the conference that education was essential for progress and prosperity of a nation. The Punjab government was making all out efforts to educate every child in the province, he added.

He hoped that challenges in the way of promotion of education like medium of instruction, curriculum, examination system, shortage of buildings and staff would be overcome.

He said private educational institutions were playing an important role in the promotion of education. Pakistani doctors, engineers and army were respected all over the world because of their professional commitment and quality of work.

Keynote speaker Roger Schank spoke about the education and learning system in the US and discussed the importance of learning by listening, arguing and culture literacy.

Nasreen Kasuri highlighted the achievements of the Beaconhouse system. She said it had set up branches in all major towns of the country.

Jonathan Power, Dr Pervaiz Hoodbhoy, Dr Naveed Malik and Zubaida Mustafa held a panel discussion over media coverage of education matters, the need for revision, update of syllabus, students training and aptitude development and a uniform policy for public and private sector educational institutions.

Former finance minister Sartaj Aziz spoke at the concluding session.

DELEGATION: Governor Maqbool said on Friday that procedural formalities and lengthy process was the main hurdle in redressal of public complaints by government organizations, adds APP.

He was talking to a 30-member delegation of officers who called on him at the Governor’s House after completion of public sector management advance course at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA). Lahore NIPA director-general Maj-Gen Sikandar Shami (retired) was also present.

The Governor said he had visited all district headquarters and most of the tehsil headquarters to get first hand knowledge of the public grievances.

“There is a lack of coordination among public sector organizations, specially those providing public utilities,” he added.

He said most of the public complaints were not about policy matters but about procedure of implementations. People wanted direct access to the officers for solution of their problems.

He said the process of transferring power at grassroots level should continue so that the problems of the people could be redressed at local level.

He praised the people of Punjab for their efforts for the quake-affected people and also the support of philanthropists for arranging mass marriages.

He said there was no dearth of good people in society but there was need to channelize their abilities towards betterment.
