From the past pages of dawn: 1947: Seventy-five years ago: Red Shirts attack Leaguers

TWO hundred Red Shirt Volunteers armed with unlicensed guns, imported into Kohat, fired several shots from tops of lorries on their brother Pathans picketing Kohat law courts. Seven League workers have been seriously injured. The condition of one is precarious. A huge procession of Muslim Women from Jangalkhel Village forced its way through the police cordon to picket the law courts here today [March 29]. They joined the League volunteers who had already paralysed the working courts by shutting down the doors from inside. Eighty-one persons were put under arrest. … Ashraf Khan, Secretary, City Muslim League Peshawar, has issued the following statement… .

“The intensity of the League’s non-communal and non-violent movement has quite puzzled the Khan Ministry. Doctor Khan is using all possible means to crush the Muslim masses and please the Congress High Command. Recently he has brought in Peshawar City a large number of Red Shirts who are trying to create trouble and who are a nuisance to the peace of citizens. They have occupied all schools in the city as their camps. The schools have been closed for an indefinite period. …

“There is a feeling of hatred and anger among Muslims masses due to this act on the part of the Khan Ministry. We ask Dr. Khan to retrace his steps and not to spoil the studies of Muslim students.”
