PLAYING WITH LIFE: This refers to the news ‘KU student among three die in accidents’ (March 3), according to which, Ayesha, 19, a student of Karachi University, who was travelling with her father, fell on the road from the motorcycle, and a water tanker, which was coming from behind, ran her over. I have no idea what might have cause the fall of the ill-fated girl, but I do wish to share my general observation that women sitting on the motorcycle tend to be less attentive about their own safety than they should. One can fall down from a motorcycle while busy in, say, chatting on a mobile phone.

URDU FUMBLES: People are having some fun these days as politicians keep making fun of their rivals’ inability to speak Urdu properly. And, as they do that, they inadvertently commit their own fumbles and the fun never stops. As a nation, we have a tendency to mock people for their weaknesses and shortcomings. Urdu is not the mother tongue of most politicians, and one should not make too much of these fumbles. We must stop belittling others. It is not worth our time.

GOVERNMENT JOBS: The government has announced a new administrative entity, the Employment Processing Resource (EPR), to assist candidates in getting government jobs. It is a great step, but a fee of Rs530 is a discouraging factor for candidates, especially students. As EPR claims to attract diversified and skilled people, it should reduce the amount and keep it as low as possible.

TERRIBLE LOGO: The commemorative medal for the diamond jubilee of independence unveiled by the President is terrible in its design, colour scheme and content. One would expect an insignia befitting the occasion of a great country and a great nation, not a monogram that is barely suitable for even a small business enterprise.
