COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL

COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL: President Arif Alvi recently unveiled the 75th Independence Day logo. Since Pakistan Army had issued various medals in the past to mark the golden jubilee of our independence and on that of the Resolution Day, it will be in fitness of things to issue a commemorative medal on this historical event, too.

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION: The government talks about fundamental rights and freedom of expression, but it also justifies actions like the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act, which is like putting the democratic future into jeopardy. The act has shocked every citizen of Pakistan who holds views that are different from what the government of the time thinks and does. Such draconian actions need to be avoided. Laws should not be enforced without a debate.

HEALTH FACILITIES: I recently visited a private hospital in Karachi and, to my surprise, most of the patients were from Balochistan who had travelled a long distance to get treatment for all kinds of major and minor health issues. It was obvious that the health facilities in Balochistan are not up to the mark and the government hospitals in Karachi are no different. Most families cannot afford to stay in Karachi for long. The government should look into the matter and provide facilities to the people.

INCOMPETENT TEACHERS: Most of the public universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa offer one-year master’s programme which costs around Rs60,000 if the candidate clears the exams in one go. The matter of concern here is that the degree is easy to get, and can be obtained without having the required skills or knowledge, which results in promoting incompetent teachers lacking in theoretical and practical knowledge to teach college-level students. The education department should adopt new rules to ensure merit and high-quality education.
