MANSEHRA: The police department and Helping Hand Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences on Tuesday jointly launched a campaign to create awareness of traffic laws among public transport drivers and other motorists to protect lives on roads.
Under the initiative with the theme ‘slow down to save lives’, the HHIRS students and teachers took out a rally on the Karakoram Highway in Datta area here.
Additional superintendent of police Mohammad Jamil told participants that the number of deaths in traffic accidents was very high in Pakistan compared with developed countries as drivers didn’t follow traffic rules.
He said the use of mobile phones and narcotics by drivers was a major cause of traffic accidents.

Mr Jamil appreciated the HHIRS students and teachers for joining the police in creating awareness of traffic laws in the district.
The student leaders said they would create awareness of traffic laws among road users in the district to protect their own and others’ lives.
They said if drivers followed traffic laws, the issues of road accidents and blockades would end.
WOMEN’S DAY: Additional deputy commissioner Nazima Shaheen on Tuesday said the district administration was making efforts for the development of women in remote areas.
Addressing an International Women’s Day function organised by the Saibaan Development Organisation here, Ms Shaheen said many schemes benefitting women directly or indirectly had been launched.
She said the government had made several laws to address the women’s issues.
The official urged women to make every effort to claim rights.
Saibaan chief executive officer Sahibzada Jawad Alfaizi and district social welfare officer Sabir Hussain Shah also addressed the event.
KKH REPAIR: Deputy commissioner Adnan Khan Behttani has said the Karakoram Highway’s Mansehra-Shinkiari section will be repaired and blacktopped soon.
“The National Highway Authority has approved funds for the repair and blacktopping of the KKH between Mansehra and Shinkiari. Work on them will begin shortly,” the DC told reporters here on Tuesday.
Mr Behttani said the roads in Mansehra city, Lari Adda, College Doraha and Punjab Chowk, and Bypass Road would be blacktopped.
A lawyers’ delegation led by Hafiz Naseem met the deputy commissioner and informed him about dilapidated roads and other public issues.
