KARACHI: City Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Sunday launched a Rs136.5 million scheme for rebuilding Kharadar under the Karachi Neighbourhood Improvement Project (KNIP).
It was the fourth uplift scheme under the World Bank-sponsored project to enhance public spaces in targeted neighbourhoods of the city and improve the city’s capacity to provide selected administrative services.
While addressing the groundbreaking ceremony of Redevelopment of Kharadar at Allah Rakha Park, the administrator said that the development of the city was under way and this journey would continue.
“Kharadar Old City Area will be rebuilt at a cost of Rs136.5m. Another Rs16.5m is being spent on the development of Allah Rakha Park and its adjoining area in Old City Area, while Rs8m is being spent on utility works, Rs13m for electricity and Rs99m for surrounding roads,” he explained.

He said that People’s Square where thousands of people visited every week was completed under the KNIP.
“The construction of a food street at Boat Basin and four adjoining parks had also been started. According to the vision of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, development of Karachi is in progress and will continue,” he said.
Barrister Wahab, who is also the provincial government’s spokesman and chief minister’s adviser on law, said that Kakri Ground, where slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s marriage ceremony was held, would be turned into a world class stadium.
He said construction of Gizri football Stadium would also be completed soon.
“The provincial government has also completed construction of 14000 Road, 8000 Road, 12000 Road and five flyovers in Korangi district,” he added.
