From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1972: Fifty Years Ago: Mujib’s state welcome

LONDON: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the freed “Bangla Desh” leader, left London’s Heathrow airport aboard a British Air Force ‘Comet’ jet just after dawn today on his way to Dacca via New Delhi where he will be accorded a State reception.

There was speculation that he might earlier make stops in Moscow and Bahrain. The British Government had placed the RAF jet at his disposal to fly anywhere he wanted to. He will fly to Dacca’s Tejgaon airport in the afternoon tomorrow [Jan 10], according to reports. A “national holiday” has been declared in Dacca on the occasion. … --- Agencies

[Meanwhile as reported by agencies in Quetta] Khan Abdul Wali Khan, chief of the National Awami party … called upon the heads of political parties and the people to engender unity of thought and action for the greater good of the country in a peaceful and democratic manner.

Addressing a NAP-JUI joint meeting here this afternoon he said: “We must take lesson from the tragedy in East Pakistan as sentimental and hasty approaches to problems would lead us nowhere”.
