I RECENTLY sat the examination conducted by the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) for the post of Tehsildar/Tehsil Officer. The papers of English and General Knowledge were held on Nov 7 and Nov 14, respectively, at the Division Public School, Model Town, Lahore.

To everyone’s utter disappointment, there was no electricity at the examination centre and it was really hazy outside due to smog. When we requested that some lighting arrangement be made, the supervisor said that the matter had been communicated to the authorities and would be resolved soon. The entire paper lasting two hours was conducted in darkness.

We just hoped that the matter will be resolved by the next exam, which was due in a week’s time, but there was no arrangement even when we appeared for the next paper. We made the same request to which we got the same answer; “matter will be resolved soon”! What ‘soon’ actually means in the dictionary being used by the PPSC is not known.

The higher authorities should make appropriate arrangements during examinations so that the candidates may perform at their best; not at their darkest.
