PU launches women safety app

LAHORE: Punjab University’s Department of Gender Studies on Wednesday launched “Women Safety Wall” android application for the protection of women against harassment and other crimes.

Punjab governor’s wife Begum Parveen Sarwar was the chief guest at the launching ceremony held on the PU’s New Campus.

PU Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar, MPA Uzma Kardar, Syed Kausar Abbas, Punjab Safe City Authority Operations Commander Asim Jasra, Department of Gender Studies Chairperson Prof Dr Ra’ana Malik, faculty members and students were present.

Ms Sarwar said a civilised society could not be built without providing protection to the women. She said the government was taking steps to ensure the women’s safety and advised the students to also inform others about the safety app.

Prof Mazhar said protection of women was essential for the socio-economic development of the country and the government was taking measures in this regard. He said people should work together for the prevention of human problems.

Asim Jasra and Fakhra Irshad gave a detailed presentation on the use of the app and claimed that more than 100,000 women were using this app.

Ms Abbas said as a proof of being a civilised citizen everyone should cooperate with police and PU students should especially benefit from the app.

Dr Malik said, “Using a safety app will boost women’s sense of security.”

ADMISSION: Online Colleges Admission Systems (OCAS) web portal is receiving applications for admissions to intermediate and bachelors programmes in selected public colleges of Punjab.

The Punjab Information Technology Board and the Higher Education Department had jointly developed the web portal to receive application for admissions to the public colleges for the first time. Now online applications for bachelors degree are open through OCAS.

OCAS provides the students from the far-off areas a chance to apply for admission in time without the hassle of travelling to the cities, besides ensuring timely compilation of applications and merit lists.
