MULTAN, Nov 11: Marcus Trescothick, the stand-in England captain, put up a brave face on Friday when he admitted that the world’s best second cricket team faces a tough first Test in Michael Vaughan’s absence.

Trescothick, addressing a press conference, said that England have performed well under pressure in recent past.

“The team is in good shape mentally for what may be an arduous battle of wits in this opening Test.

The boys have sort of switched on in the last couple of days,” he said.

He described the defeat in the tour game against Pakistan ‘A’ as a bit of wake-up call.

“Losing that match (in Lahore) has made sure we remain switched on and focused. That also means you work hard on your game to be competitive.”

Trescothick agreed that losing Vaughan was a huge setback for England.

“It’s never easy to have the captain missing especially at the start of the series.

However, I’m sure the boys would be trying their best to make up for the loss.”

The Somerset man, however, remained unfazed by the responsibility, and pledged that England’s approach would be different from that which served Nasser Hussain’s men five years ago.

“We are a totally different team. We are a more youthful team, with a little bit more positiveness. The best thing is we have gained confidence from winning big series over long periods of time,” he said defiantly.

On the fragile look of the England batting order, Trescothick stressed that it was a good opportunity for Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood to show their mettle.

The injury to Vaughan means England have virtually the same XI which played Australia at The Oval in the final Ashes Test, with the out-of-form Bell lucky to retain his place.

“I have a lot of confidence that he (Bell) will do well. It is a good opportunity for him since the wickets are pretty good,” he said, while adding “I do hope he can take advantage in this series.”

Inzamamul Haq, the Pakistan captain, as usual looked a calm figure.

“It is a big challenge for my boys, especially taking into account how well England have done in the last couple of years.

“We have a young team which has developed nicely but again to win you have to play well.”

Inzamam pointed out Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen as the danger men in the England squad.  They are every exciting players who have performed very well recently.”

Inzamam acknowledged that Vaughan’s absence gives Pakistan advantage but remained cautious.

“Vaughan is a very good batsman and captain. But we feel that England is still a formidable side.”

About Danish Kaneria, the Pakistan skipper predicted that the leg-spinner would play a key part in the outcome of the series.

“He has done really well in the past two years. And I really hope and expect that Danish plays a major part in this series.”
