Man killed in crossfire between police, muggers

KARACHI: A passerby was killed and a suspected robber wounded and arrested in critical condition after an encounter in Orangi Town on Sunday evening.

West SSP Suhai Aziz said that three suspects riding a motorbike arrived at a shop near Dak Khana in Sector-8-L, Banaras. They snatched a cell phone from a citizen there and were trying to snatch the purse of another citizen when a police patrol reached the scene and challenged them.

She said on seeing the police, the armed robbers started firing and the police returned fire. During the exchange of firing, one suspect, identified as Imran Iqbal, 25, was arrested in an injured condition while his two accomplices managed to escape, she said.

The SSP said that a passerby, identified as Aftab alias Babu, 50, suffered bullet wound in the leg due to the firing of the robbers. The wounded passer-by and robber were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Aftab was pronounced dead.

The police recovered one pistol, snatched cell phone and a motorbike from the wounded suspect, whose condition was said to be critical.

PAF man shot dead

A young man was shot dead by armed carjackers over resistance in Korangi, police said on Sunday.

They added that Mohammed Jamil, 28, was killed in Sector-27 near Ghazi Masjid late on Saturday night.

Awami Colony SHO Safdar Mashwani said the victim, who was an employee of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), had come to the city on leave to meet his family.

He was heading home in a car when armed motorcyclists intercepted him and tried to snatch the car from him. Jamil resisted and overpowered one of the suspects but his accomplice opened fire on him and fled.

He suffered critical bullet wounds and was shifted to the JPMC, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Meanwhile, a suspected robber was shot dead by a citizen in Sher Shah late on Saturday night.

The police said that one armed suspect tried to snatch cash and other valuables from Barkat Ali at Mauripur Road. The citizen pulled out his licensed pistol and opened fire on him, resulting in the death of the suspect.

The body was shifted to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi where his identity could not be ascertained till late in the night.
