TEST AMID LOCKDOWN

TEST AMID LOCKDOWN: The computer proficiency test for the induction of patwaris was conducted by Rawalpindi district on Sept 4 and 5 when the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had imposed a lockdown just a day earlier which resulted in the closure of all inter-city transport. Consequently, a large number of candidates, mostly from far-flung areas, failed to reach the venue. The test surely needs to be rescheduled.

P.I.A. SOCIETY MAFIA: Earlier this year, a few letters published in these columns led to the dismissal of the land-grabbing mafia active in the PIA Employees Cooperative Housing Society. The provincial government appointed an administrator to set things right, but the mafia got the individual replaced by their own tout. Now the gang is planning to stage a comeback as it has requested for elections. The government should again come to the rescue of the lawful residents of the society.

UNEMPLOYED ENGINEERS: While thousands of engineers are jobless in the country, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has allotted a 20 per cent job quota for non-engineers on positions meant for engineers. According to the PEC, diploma-holders and BTech technologists can only be deployed on engineering positions when there is a scarcity of engineers, which is not the case right now.

DO AWAY WITH EXAMS: This refers to the news ‘Education body decides not to fail any student this year’ (Sept 14). I have seen many interesting answer sheets in my long teaching career; some students appealing the examiner to pass him for the ‘love of humanity’, but this time they may just leave the paper blank and be proud of their success later. A better option would surely have been to arrange supplementary examinations for the failures.
