From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: Kotlakhpat jail riot

LAHORE: The twelve-hour rioting by over 300 convicts kept in the Kotlakhpat Jail was brought under control ... by the jail and police authorities after the prisoners had set the store on fire and damaged a number of barracks. Yesterday’s [Sept 14] riots ... took place hardly a month after the incident in which two under-trials were shot dead when some of the convicts attempted an escape from the jail. The Government has already ordered an enquiry into the incident, but the findings are yet to be made public.

Meanwhile, cases were today registered against a prisoner, Abdul Majeed, and 23 others for armed fighting and forming unlawful assembly. The IG Prisons Brigadier Zahur Malik, today inspected the jail and received a delegation of eight prisoners, who apprised him of their grievances.... — Staff correspondent

[Meanwhile, as reported by the newspaper’s staff correspondent in Rawalpindi,] The Economic Adviser to the President, Mr. M.M. Ahmad, was stabbed by an employee of the Capital Development Authority in his office lift early this morning [Sept 15] and is now in the Combined Military Hospital. Later in the afternoon his condition was officially described as “satisfactory” but the hospital sources said he will be confined to hospital for at least two weeks.
