RAWALPINDI: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, leader of the defunct Awami League, has chosen Mr A.K. Brohi, one of the most eminent lawyers of the country, to defend him before the Special Military Court, according to a Press note issued by the Headquarters of the Chief Martial Law Administrator this evening [Aug 20].
Mr Brohi has left Karachi this evening for his first meeting with Sheikh Mujib, the Press note added.
The Press Note said: “At his first appearance before the Special Military Court on Aug 11, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman presented a list of three names of lawyers for his defence in order of preference. The first name was that of Mr A.K. Brohi.
“In compliance with the undertaking given by the President that the Sheikh would be defended by a Pakistani Counsel of his own choice, the Law Ministry approached Mr Brohi for the purpose, who expressed unwillingness at first on account of his heavy commitments to other clients.
… “The Government is glad to announce to announce that Mr Brohi has agreed to make the necessary sacrifice as a matter of public and professional duty. …”
It may be recalled that … Sheikh Mujib was to be tried by Special Military Court for “waging war against Pakistan” and other offences.
