KARACHI, Nov 1: The City Nazim, Mustafa Kamal, says he wants to bring a revolutionary change with regard to provision of civic facilities. Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the Korangi Town Office building, the city nazim declared that all civic problems including encroachments, which remained pending despite years of efforts, would now be resolved gradually.

He said all projects that were in abeyance for many years including the Karachi mass transit project would also be undertake at the earliest.

Mr Kamal pointed out that defective sanitary conditions were increasingly defacing the city, saying efforts had been started to improve arrangements in this regard. He said work was fast progressing on the garbage transfer station project.

He said a decision had also been taken to overcome the shortage of heavy machinery, adding that the city government would make two heavy machines available to each town in the next one month.

The nazim informed that steps were being taken on priority basis for solving the problems of water and sewerage, and that Water Board officials had been directed to initiate measures for solving these problems in liaison and consultation with town nazims.

He observed that 33 per cent water was going to waste due to leakages and, therefore, a decision had been taken for the repair and replacement of these lines at a cost of Rs2,700 million.

He also emphasised the need for having feelings of ownership as well as participation both among people and the administration for solving problems, adding community cooperation was very essential.

Mr Kamal told the gathering that the health delivery system too would be improved and steps were in hand to improve the working of all hospitals of the city. Landhi and Korangi hospitals would be made model health institutions, he said.
