PESHAWAR, Oct 31: Central president of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Qazi Hussain Ahmad has opposed involvement of army in rehabilitation work in the quake-devastated areas of the NWFP and Azad Kashmir.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Islamic banking system at the Nowshera branch of Bank of Khyber on Monday, he said Gen Pervez Musharraf was bypassing the Parliament and the cabinet by involving army in the rehabilitation work.
“It is job of neither army nor the National Security Council to monitor rehabilitation work. Army had already been accused of receiving commission in purchase of military hardware,” the MMA president remarked, said a press release.
He urged the federal government to transfer all foreign and local aid to the NWFP and the Azad Kashmir governments.
Qazi Hussain dismissed a statement of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz that a supervisory committee of the Parliament would look after rehabilitation activities and utilisation of funds. He said that Gen Musharraf had transferred all powers to senior generals who were above any accountability.
Appreciating introduction of interest-free banking system in the province, the MMA leader said Islamic banking system was need of the hour. He urged the people to make the system a success.
He said that the country’s economy could improve, if people adopted Islamic banking system. He also appreciated financial discipline and policies of the NWFP government.
The function was also attended by provincial ministers and bankers.
