Buffalo shooters granted bail

KARACHI: A local court has granted bail to eight suspects detained for allegedly shooting and wounding a ‘wild’ buffalo before its slaughter on Eidul Azha.

Police claimed to have arrested Imran, Zubair, Attaur Rehman, Anwar Ali, Waseem, Moin, Salman and Irfan for shooting at and wounding the animal.

The buffalo had gone out of control and went on the rampage before its slaughter in the Karachi University Housing Society on Wednesday.

A video of the incident went viral on social media sparking public outrage at the firing on the animal and demanding action against its owner, handlers and shooters.

On Thursday, the investigating officer produced the suspects before a judicial magistrate (Malir), who was on special duty on Eid holidays, to seek their physical remand in police custody for interrogation and investigation.

He said that a video went viral, showing the suspects shooting at the buffalo purportedly with rifles and TT pistols causing injuries to the sacrificial animal.

The IO stated that the suspects had also allegedly made videos of the brutal activity.

He added that from the initial investigation and statements of the witnesses it transpired that the suspects were involved in committing an act which was an offence punishable under the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1890.
