CAPE TOWN, Oct 28: Scott Styris and Kyle Mills struck the key blows as New Zealand restricted South Africa’s batsmen in the second one-day international in Cape Town on Friday.
South Africa totalled a mediocre 201 for nine after winning the toss and choosing to bat on a sluggish pitch.
Medium pacer Styris varied the pace and style of his deliveries effectively to take two for 29 from his 10 overs. He halted South Africa’s growing momentum by dismissing Graeme Smith and Shaun Pollock in consecutive overs.
Smith hit four fours and a six in his 36 before Styris bowled him with an off-cutter.
Pollock was sent in as a pinch-hitter, and heaved a seemingly innocuous Styris delivery down long-on’s throat to be dismissed without scoring.
Medium pacer Mills, who took four for 44, claimed crucial wickets when he caught and bowled Mark Boucher for 40 and had Jacques Kallis caught at long-on for 51.
Kallis, South Africa’s premier batsman, worked hard for his runs, which he scored off 94 balls with just two fours.
