Dawn.com is looking to hire and we have multiple job openings — all Karachi-based — at the entry, mid and senior level.

Step 1: Are you a candidate?

While prior journalism experience is a plus, you can also apply if you are

• an English language aficionado
• skeptical of forward messages and would rather fact check and get to the bottom of a story
• a budding writer looking to influence and inform
• social media buff who not only follows multiple accounts but has opinions about them
• willing to experiment with design
• critical thinker, passionate about lifestyle and culture trends
• someone willing to learn and be a team player for eight hours, six days a week

Step 2: Which desk do I want to apply for?

We have openings on News Desk, Images (culture and entertainment) and social media.

News Desk

It's right there in the title: it's all about news. You will be expected to chase reporters for a story, call them again to verify, find what a particular politician said on a late-night current affairs show that is news worthy, transcribe an hour-long press conference to find that one nugget of information that your audiences want to know — and do all of this fast.

Staying up-to-date on what's trending online is a critical part of the job — whether that's news spreading across social media or keeping an eye on the competition.

Secondary tasks can include social media, special projects and assignments.

It's about the three Cs: culture, creativity and curiosity.

The desk covers a number of areas, including entertainment, music, and social issues. You'll be monitoring across mediums to see what’s new, what’s trending, and what’s missing, and brainstorming what we’ll report on and our stance on the issue(s) on hand.

You could turn a three-line Instagram caption into a full story, spot a trend on social media that touches upon a crucial societal issue or work on a travel/food feature.

You get to interact with freelancers, reporters, influencers and celebs. Of course, writing, editing, rewriting, then editing some more is a key part of the job, and so is coming up with fun, creative ways to share our stories to social media.

Social Media

Do you spend a majority of your day jumping from Facebook and Instagram to Twitter and Instagram? If yes, then you're off to a good start.

But social media is more than just consuming the information; you will be expected to plan and create engaging written, graphic, and video content; promote audience interaction as well as develop large social media campaigns around key issues for Dawn.com’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts as well as for our lifestyle and culture website Images on all platforms.

You have to be in the know about what's trending online and new apps and tools. Coordination with other desks is key.
