Purse snatcher sentenced to one-year jail

RAWALPINDI: In a speedy trial, a civil judge on Thursday sentenced a young man to one year’s imprisonment and fined him Rs30,000 for snatching a purse from a schoolteacher earlier this week.

Anis Iqbal, who snatched the purse from schoolteacher on Friday morning, was arrested by police soon after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

His speedy trial was held by the court of civil judge Sardar Omer Hassan Khan who announced the verdict on Thursday.

In addition, the convict will have to spend 15 months in jail for his involvement in other cases.

Mohammad Junaid Ahmed, a resident of Dhoke Chaudhrian, had lodged an FIR with the Race Course police stating that his sister was going to her school when a motorcycle rider snatched her purse and fled.

CCTV footage of the incident went viral on the social media sparking concerns among the residents of the city. The purse snatcher was arrested by the police the same day.
