Rs30bn Thar water project signed with Kuwaiti firm

KARACHI: The Sindh government has signed a Rs30.1 billion or $190 million 25-year concession agreement with EnerTech Holding, a Kuwaiti state-owned company, for provision of 45 cusecs of water through a 61km pipeline from Nabisar to Vajihar.

The signing ceremony was attended by Counsel General of Kuwait Salim Yusif Al-Hamdan, CEO EnerTech water Yasser Malik, COO Usman Ahsan, MD Pak-Kuwait Investment Company, Energy Minister Imtiaz Shaikh, Irrigation Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal and Local Government Minister Nasir Shah.

Other officials witnessed the signing ceremony through video link.

EnerTech Holding Company signed the MoU with the provincial government and was awarded the letter of interest (LoI) to develop the Nabisar-Vajihar project for water supply to Thar power projects.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said the water supply project would ensure the supply of industrial water to coal-based power sector.

He said the project would be completed within 12 months.

Yasser Malik told the chief minister that the construction would start in July.

On behalf of the provincial government, irrigation secretary Saleem Khuhro and Mr Malik signed the agreement. The 25-year concession agreement relates to the processing and supply of 45 cusecs of water from Nabisar, through a 61km pipeline to Vajihar.

The project will encompass the construction of reservoirs at Nabisar and Vajihar.
