KARACHI, Oct 26: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, lauding multinational companies for the support they have extended in relief efforts for quake victims, has appealed to them to play their role also in the rehabilitation of survivors and reconstruction of the devastated areas.

He was talking to a delegation of the Overseas Chamber of Commerce (OCC), led by Sohail Wajahat Siddiqui, which called on him at the Governor’s House here on Wednesday.

Principal Secretary to the Governor Mohammad Salim Khan, Secretary Commerce & Industries Nasir Hayat and other officials were present on the occasion.

Dr Ibad observed that the MNCs were cooperating in the uplift of various sectors, including education, health and social welfare, and said that the way these firms had cooperated with the governor’s programme for benevolence of legends was exemplary. He also apprised the delegation of the progress of the programme.

About rehabilitation of quake survivors and reconstruction of the ravaged areas, he said the government had devised a coordinated plan. “People will be kept informed of the progress of the plan so that the bigger aim of rehabilitation and reconstruction could be achieved,” he added.

The governor hoped that people and institutions of Karachi would also play a leading role and set an example of solidarity with the quake victims in this hour of trial.

The delegation told him that OCC members had so far provided Rs3 billion aid for the people of quake-hit areas. It assured him of all-out support in the rehabilitation and reconstruction process.

Mr Sohail Wajahat recalled the remarks made by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz while addressing the meeting of investors in Islamabad last week especially appreciating the relief efforts being put in by people and organizations of Karachi.

Meanwhile, noted orthopaedic surgeon Dr Mohammad Ali Shah called on Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad and apprised him of the medical aid being provided by his clinic to the quake victims in the affected areas.—PPI
