PESHAWAR: The Higher Education Regulatory Authority (HERA) and the National Counter-Terrorism Authority (Nacta) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to tackle extremism among youth at the higher education institutions.

Addressing the function held at the Governor’s House, Governor Shah Farman termed the MoU encouraging and said they had to protect youth from the menaces of extremism and drugs through a comprehensive strategy.

He noted that war psychology was implemented in the region in a very systematic manner, which was later converted into terrorism. “We have to overcome extremism and terrorism in accordance with our traditions and culture, and to protect our youth from indulging in these activities, especially drug addiction,” he added.

He emphasised on special legislation for complete eradication of drug use in universities, terming the role of vice-chancellors and faculty members imperative to curb the menace.

He said Khyber Medical University should take steps to curb use of narcotics in the form of medicine.

Kamran Bangash, Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Higher Education, and Director General Nacta Mohammad Ali Baba Khel were also present on the occasion.

Welcoming the MoU, Mr Bangash said the move would go a long way in protecting the youth from turning to extremism.

The Nacta DG termed the MoU as an excellent initiative.
