Rs39m embezzlement: Seven-year jail for Gepco official
GUJRANWALA: A court on Wednesday awarded seven-year imprisonment to an official of the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) for Rs39 million embezzlement scam.
Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Assistant Director (legal) Munawwar Iqbal Ranjha said that in 2016, some retired Gepco employees submitted applications to the Gujranwala FIA that assistant accounts officer Ghulam Murtaza was not paying their salaries and deposited their cheques with a private bank. After an inquiry it was proved that the assistant accounts officer embezzled Rs39 million.
A case was registered against Murtaza who deposited Rs1.7 million with the exchequer and got a bail. The Gepco authorities dismissed him from service.
The court awarded seven-year imprisonment to him and ordered to recover Rs39m from him.
BURNT: A man died while two others were burnt in an LPG cylinder blast at Alipur Chattha on Wednesday.
Jamshad was running an LPG refilling shop at Madrawa Chatha where two persons came for gas refilling. During the process a cylinder blast took place which resulted in the death of one person and two were injured.
RAPE: A girl was raped and killed at Dhonkal, Wazirabad on Wednesday.
Police arrested the suspect and registered a case against him.
SEALED: The Gujranwala Development Authority (GDA) sealed two illegal housing schemes here on Wednesday.
GDA Director General Maqbool Ahmad Majoka said teams raided and sealed illegal housing schemes.
