From the past pages of dawn: 1971: Fifty years ago: Kaptai powerhouse saved

DACCA: A gang of saboteurs and miscreants made an abortive attempt yesterday [April 15] to blow up the Kaptai hydro-electric power station on the Karnaphuli river. The power house was saved by the timely intervention of the Armed Forces. The power station suffered no damage. All the miscreants were wiped out. Indian infiltrators supported by anti-State elements yesterday also tried to blast Ashuganj thermal power plant, which was completed only towards the end of last year, at a cost of Rs21,00,00,000. … The infiltrators were all set to dynamite the plant but the timely action of Pakistan Army foiled their plan. — Agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by agencies in Dacca,] Inter-Wing postal services have been restored with the resumption of PIA flights between Karachi and Dacca, according to a Government announcement yesterday [April 15]. PIA is now carrying airmail between Karachi and Dacca in their regular flights. …

[Agencies add,] A deputation on behalf of the Working Committee of Central Peace Committee led by Mr Nurul Amin waited upon the Governor of East Pakistan, Lt-Gen. Tikka Khan... . [They] apprised the Governor of the progress made by them towards restoring normalcy... . They also brought to the notice of the Governor certain difficulties being experienced by members of the public.
